I was texting with Alva today to see how she's doing. She was walking home from the library...10 to 12 city blocks!!! With Jane Eyre on tape and 2 mysteries. Her speech therapist is cutting her loose after one more session, which is great. She's still struggling some with writing and texting, but otherwise she's doing well... progressing nicely thankfully.

She sends love and thanks everyone for their cards.

Thanks for the update Lea.
I was in the bookstore today and found myself thinking about Alva’s posts on the book thread.
Glad to hear she’s been out to the library.

You'd think I'd know how to check for recent messages, but obviously I missed the boat on Lealonnie's April 2 update. Y-a-a-y for Alva and all best wishes for her continued recovery. Sounds like it's going pretty well so far.

Update: I spoke with Alva on the phone earlier and she's sounding pretty darn good, speech wise. She struggles with writing and texting, however, and doesn't use the internet at all anymore as a result. She has no plans to return to A.C. which is a big disappointment to all of us, I know. She's walking a lot and reading, listening to books on CD, and gardening. I thought she sounded particularly down today, having never expected to be in this position. I can understand that 100%. We can never prepare ourselves for life changing disabilities, that's for sure.

Her partner is losing his short term memory, she said, so the future looks unknown at the moment. Sue is coming to visit soon, thankfully.

Keep the cards coming and keep our friend in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for the update. I'm sad that I won't be reading anymore of her insights but I understand how this goes. Her posts were always so knowleable and kind and her beautiful personality always shone through. I will be sending you a card soon.

Thanks for the update. I fully get not being able to plan for every eventuality or control the situations that come our way. I’m glad Alva is still finding joy in gardening and reading, and wish her continued recovery.

Alva would frequently note how glad she was that her daughters lived at least a thousand miles away. I get why she said it then, but for now into the future it is fortunate that Sue has the time off to come out.

I hope Alva at least reads the Internet and recalls the advice from other long timers in that proactively moving to a senior community near family might be worth consideration. She’s a recent stroke survivor, her mister has cognitive decline and they are octogenarians.

Thank you for the update, Lea. I'm so glad Alva continues to improve. I thoroughly miss her participation on A.C. We often commented semi-simultaneously on issues. However, it's one of those "it is what it is" situations. In old-old age no one can predict what will happen next. Our life is O.K.--until it isn't. Which can be quite frightening!
