That Greece case, if I remember correctly, the Mom was visiting her son who was a big restaurant owner. Meaning he had money. She ended up in the Hospital and wracked up 70k or 80k in bills. When she got discharged, she went back to Greece. The son was sued and he ended up having to pay Moms bill because, he had the money.

Agree, Snoopy. When my parents both declined a couple of years ago, I called an attorney about 'filial laws' in my state and I was informed there were not any laws obligating adult children to provide care to elders. People can get an answer to this question, but I think they mostly just assume things.

I think an obligation of elder care comes from society, religious beliefs or just personal opinion. There is however a very real aspect about the responsibility we have to our own sovereignty and not losing ourselves to something that has already proven to be destructive. I think mostly it is too ugly of a situation and people instead avoid it.

This article is certainly timely as we so often see people on the forum struggling to care for parents who were difficult, mentally ill, absent, neglectful or downright abusive. But I have to point out some misinformation in it:

“Although you may feel that it is either emotionally or financially impossible for you to care for an aging parent, you may not have a choice about it. Most states have some form of filial responsibility laws, meaning that adult children have a legal and financial obligation to care for their parents or pay for their care.”

If “most states” have filial responsibility laws still on the books, they are never enforced. I believe there was one case in Pennsylvania where a very rich family from Greece tried to commit Medicaid or Medicare fraud to get care for their loved one or something like that. The details escape me at this moment. But anyway, no one is being forced right now to care for parents and I don’t want any adult children of problematic parents thinking that they now have no choice but to take their abusive mom in or something like that.
